WIMTACH HACKATHONS

Hackathon: Developing educational resources to help community members prepare for emergencies

In September 2024, the City of Toronto identified a significant need to develop culturally appropriate and accessible educational materials to support communities responding to disruptions to their daily lives and emergencies, such as heat waves, prolonged power outages, or extreme weather. In addition to this, Toronto Emergency Management learned that communication is critical for engaging communities and gaining public support. In collaboration with the Social Innovation Research Centre at Centennial College, we are working together to create public education materials designed for diverse cultural and linguistic groups in online text-based format, audio, and video. The materials will answer simple questions, such as “what should I do if my apartment is too hot to stay in?” or “where can I go if the power goes out in the cold and I don’t have heat in my apartment?”

In this hackathon, we are aiming to develop effective and creative communication tools to educate the public about what to do and how to respond in emergency situations, while focusing on the information presented in the City of Toronto’s “Get Emergency Ready” brochure. Our goal is to use the information in the brochure to create new resources that have improved design and accessibility, are more user-friendly, and communicate the information effectively to the culturally diverse residents of Toronto. Thus, we are inviting Centennial College Students to participate in this upcoming Hackathon event.

Hackathon Dates:
Fri. Nov 22, 2024 – Virtual Briefing Meeting
Tues. Nov 26, 2024 – Hackathon Day 1
Wed. Nov 27, 2024 – Hackathon Day 2
Thurs. Nov 28, 2024 – Hackathon Day 3 (judging panel)

Participation:
To participate in this exciting hackathon, attendees should possess a variety of skillsets, as the hackathon challenge is quite diverse. Below are the required skillsets:

Teamwork:
Collaborative skills to work effectively in a team, as this project involves working together to create clear, accessible, and culturally diverse educational material.

Problem Solving and Creativity:
Thinking outside the box to overcome challenges and come up with innovative solutions. Ability to troubleshoot and resolve any issues.

Communication and Presentation:
Ability to convey ideas, progress, and results effectively to judges. Strong narrative and story-telling abilities. Multilingual experience is also an asset.

Design Skills:
A keen eye for color, composition, typography, and an overall aesthetic sensibility.

Technical Skills:

Knowledge of software like Adobe Creative Cloud, AutoCAD, and Figma is considered an asset.

Students from these programs at Centennial College are encouraged to participate in this Hackathon:

-General Arts or Liberal Arts Programs
-Advertising, Marketing and Public Relations Programs
-Arts, Animation and Design Programs
-Community and Child Services Programs
Health Studies and Communications Skills Program
-Information Technology, Networking and Software Engineering Programs
-Media, Communication and Writing Programs

Participating students!
This exciting event offers a unique opportunity to join forces with a diverse group of like-minded peers in teams of four (4). We highly recommend embracing this diversity of skills to foster innovation and creativity. Together, your team will collaborate intensively, dedicating seven (7) hours per day throughout the event. Join us in this dynamic environment where your skills and ideas will be key to the success of your project!
